ot: xp sp2 synchronising with a laptop

Just lost some work on my laptop. It is setup so that it has copies of
folders from my main desktop PC using XP's built in synchronisation
utilities so that whenever I reconnect to the network here, modified
files from both devices are synched and any conflicts are flagged. Been
working with this for a couple of years without any problem.
Until recently.
When I rebooted my laptop this morning, one of the folders that was
supposed to be synchronised was completely missing - no sign of the
files that were in it anywhere. I had been working on files in the
folder immediately (like the minute before) prior to the reboot. A
similar thing happened a month ago after I had installed some Skype
phone software (linksys) and rebooted, some of the key folders I
synchronise disappeared. I put it down at that time to some foible
related to the installation of that software.. now it has recurred,
confidence in the utility has been severly knocked. Anyone experienced
similar problems / know of any solutions?
Also now I'd be happy to pay for a solid utility which might handle it
more reliably than XP does. As I work from two offices, I cannot do
without this kind of feature.
