No, they should be 720x576 for PAL

It's not in the camera it's in Movie Maker.

In the Sony software, I'm limited to 320x240. In Movie Maker I seem only
able to import at 640x480, but at least I can save the movie as 720x576.

Switters has it on the nose, the USB is your problem. You need to
capture full DV from the camera.
