It wasn't 'a trap'. It's what I teach on a daily basis; it's what
_I_ was taught when preparing for the teacher training exams,
i.e. that the two tenses in English are present (i.e. 'Ø'), and past
('simple past' in English; 'prétérit' in French). After that, you
start getting into the addition of auxiliaries, but they're not
considered as 'tenses', _stricto sensu_.
In that sense, not all of the `tenses' of French are `tenses', the
passé composé and plus-que-parfait, for example.
So don't be silly.
Granted.
