Line printers, they still exist.

At Galileo we had a selection of these - they had to be kept in a small
room of their own with extra sound-dampening as they were so loud.

Incredibly fast though.

What I did have to do was read the type back to front and upside down to check for errors. ... You would start proofing that way and then a compositor would come around with ink and a roller, place a wet sheet of blank newsprint over the metal on the stone and roll off a proof that you could read but couldn't write on immediately because the paper was still wet. ...
