Found the fault. It was corroded connections between the drop line and the NTE5 master socket. Remade connections. I've now got the best line I've had for years.
Don't forget to cross charge BT for your time.

Or at lease cancel the engineer, or you will get charged....


Cancelled the call out, when asked why, explained that a professional Engineer had fixed it and it was a fault on their side and not on mine, as their call centre guy had insisted. I then asked to whom I should send the bill, as a week to wait for a phone line to be repaired when it was also used for a burglar alarm auto dialler was not acceptable and was a break of their own policies. They said that they would have to send an engineer to inspect the work and charge me. I pointed out that my repair was done by and Engineer spelt with a capital E and not a repair man called an engineer. I then insisted in return that the professional Engineer would have to inspect the repair man's work to check that it met my standards and obviously I would be charging for that.

The lady on the other end of the line then said "Shall we just cancel the visit by our er.... repair man?"
