No, that's just a rule of thumb. And it's not the max "safe" rate,
it's the max you can actually do - max heart rate is the max your
heart can actually pump. Interestingly, this number is not much
affected by training, and seems mostly to be genetic.
Well I'm 46, have a resting heart rate under 60 and can EASILY get over
200 by exercising hard, so 220 -age isn't a maximum of any sort
What part of "rule of thumb" didn't you understand. However, over 200
for someone in their 40s is exceptional - enough for me to accuse you
of bullshitting.
