No, that's just a rule of thumb. And it's not the max "safe" rate,
it's the max you can actually do - max heart rate is the max your
heart can actually pump. Interestingly, this number is not much
affected by training, and seems mostly to be genetic.

Well I'm 46, have a resting heart rate under 60 and can EASILY get over 200 by exercising hard, so 220 -age isn't a maximum of any sort
