Anyone notice that arses play a leading role in most of these phrases btw?
Strange that. I offer you two phrases I remember that could be misconstrued these days:
"Got their bottom in their hands" - sulking
"Like a fairy on a gob of lard" - ungainly
And one which I ham sure has innumerable regional variations:
"A face as long as Livery Street" - pissed off and showing it.
