Re: OT: I think Garmin is trying to tell me to buy a new computer

Jeremy scribbled on the back of a napkin:

City Navigator Europe v8 & latest Mapsource.

I'm trying to put a useful number of maps on a 1GB flash card for my
2610 (Germany, Benelux, Switzerland, large parts of France, all of
the UK and bits of Austria and Italy - all in all about 950MB
worth) and before it actually writes the maps to the card it builds
an 'index'.

Which seems to take at least one hour. Granted, the machine is not
that fast (Athlon XP2800 w/ 1GB of RAM) but this seems to be
extracting the urine, especially because it appears to build said
index every time you write something to a memory card.

Anybody else seeing this?

Do you have to install it via a docking station (assume there is some
kind of cradle/usb arrangement) - I am running TT5 now on the Medion
and copied the maps directly to the card via a USB card reader - just
a few seconds. Was dead slow otherwise.

Via a card reader. I don't really want to know how long these transfers
would take via the 'direct' connection on the 2610.

It's not the transfer itself, it's the building of the 'index'
(presumably for all the searchable features) that does take a long time.

I've posted the same question to UKGSer and got the answer that with
the latest maps and software, they all do that sir.
