We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

Feed some to your cat. If it doesn't die within a day, it's probably
safe to eat.

Actually, I'm faced with this dilemma on a recurring basis; finding
half-used tins of tuna at the back of the fridge, I usually clear a
nostril and give them a bloody good sniff. I haven't died yet or had all
that many untoward toilet experiences.
