It's not hard.

Seriously

I just had a thought.

A couple of times I've had similar happen to me now I come to think of
it.

After scratching my head for a bit I looked at
C:\Documents And Settings\
and saw that as well as my existing user directory (call it "fred")
there was a new one (say "fred_0001").

It seemed something had gotten screwed up in my user profile, it
couldn't be loaded and XP decided it would be a good idea to create a
fresh new one.

I suspect this happens when some program has the registry locked and
you try to log out or shut the system down. The machine sits at "Saving
User Settings" for bloody ages, it *will* get past that stage, but it
looks like its crashed and prodding the reset button either produces
this or completely fucks up the registry (if it does this i've found
its normally re-install time). Sometimes it also produces an error when
you try to log back in as that user even if you let Windows
exit/shutdown properly.

I found a nifty little utility that I installed to terminate any locks
that any programs had on the registry so it can be unloaded cleanly,
its called "User Profile Hive Cleanup", or uphclean.

I install in on all my machines now and have never had the problem
since.

So have a look in
C:\Documents And Settings\
and see if its created another directory with your user name with
something appended to it. If it has its a simple matter of copying the
bits across. I'd guess these directories would be good to copy:-
.\Cookies
.\Desktop
.\Favourites
.\My Documents
.\Start Menu
possibly .\Local Settings - but something in there might be what caused
the problem. Have a look in the sub directories in here and try just
copying across the program directories you absolutely must keep the
settings/data of.
Ditto for .\Application Data

OE stuff is held in
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{<long string of numbers&letters>}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\

HTH

I'm sure it will

I'm just printing this out to take to work on Monday
