I've seen camera's[1] *proper fucked* by plugging a hot firewire cable into
them while PC and Camera are both turned on. My Canon is detected without
any drivers over firewire.
As soon as you fire up the software you should be able to capture and
control the camera from the PCcccccccccc ooooh (***, I think the house was
just hit by lightening).
Have you tried a.n.other IEEE1394 device - e.g. Hard Drive ?
[1] - My departmental 2 week old canon XL1SE.
