Re: You learn something new every day !

I don't know what it is like now, but in my time the railway was fun.
It really was. Something funny, riduculous or bizarre happend almost
daily, mostly down to the "characters", which was practicaly everyone.
In those days the pay was rubbish, even for drivers (how much do they
earn now!!!), so everyone who lasted more than a few months did the
job for the jobs sake - there was no "career" since promotion, such as
there was, was all down to seniority. Even people who didn't get on
socially would muddle along happily to keep the railway going. There
was a real, genuine, "family" atmosphere which I've never encuntered in
any
other job

I was once helping out on the platform at Westbury due to sickness
and gave the Guard the tip. As the train moved off I was hit in the
face by small metallic objects. What the...... My watch chain had
got caught in the handle of the door I'd just shut. A fraction nearer
and it would have hooked in my waistcoat.....

I'm slowly adding my tales to my Soddingham site.

Cheers
Richard

I have become... comfortably numb
Were you at Westbury when the cement tanker went through the buffer-stops
into the River Frome?
