The thing in the USA movies seems to be steam locomotives that whistle
constantly in any number of movies or tv episodes. I remember reading about
a set designer for the TV show "Gunsmoke" who said it was all he could do on
an episode shot on the Sierra Railroad in California to keep the director
from having the whistle blown all the time. Oh and the train was lettered
for Burlington Northern!

When filming, there's an awful lot of hanging around between takes.
Probably the use of draincocks was very necessary since the loco could
have been standing still for quite a while before the shot was taken.

No, the director probably asked for "Lots of steam and smoke please."
