Torx sizes

I have found more horrible Torx cap head screws - big ones for which I
don't have a key. I don't understand the sizing - the biggest I have
in my set is T40 - which are 6.5mm across between points - so how the
heck are they sized ? 40 what, gnats crotchets ? I suppose I will have
to buy some more bits, but I need to measure these so I buy big
enough.
