Indeed. I started with one or two live CDs. But these are not the only
distros to consider. There are one or two major ones (eg, Debian,
Fedora) which are, as far as I know, not available in this form.

Ubuntu is Debian based. Fedora might be missing some potential users if they have no easy way to evaluate it. Ubuntu didn't easily install in a Virtual Machine (how I normally evaluate a new OS) if it hadn't been for the Live CD I probably would still be running Windows or on another distro.

I'm also disappointed by the graphics resolutions available to me.
1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz is fine in Windows, but I can't get above 54 Hz in
Linux. 1024 x 768 looks dire on a 19" monitor.

should be possible, I'm running 1280x1024x85Hz but ISWYM since installing the "restricted" X800 driver I lost my usual 1280x960 and why does every Window Manager always default to 1600x1200 upon first login? I cannot see the poxy thing to set it back to something sensible.

I was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which I found a good DVD
burning prog (in the form of K3B), and already use the excellent
OpenOffice in Windows.

I was equally chuffed in Nautilus (the gnome file manager) I can right click a .iso file and burn it to a disk.

I used Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox for mail and news in Windows anyway and am using the same programs in Linux so the switch there was unnoticeable.

Likewise with Firefox. If it wasn't for the history, I'd be content
with Thunderbird.

Not sure what you mean by the history.

Your name rings bells in my mind. I've a feeling that our paths have
crossed before... perhaps in the mid-90s on one of Easynet's NGs?

Most probably, I was quite prolific in there back then.
