Indeed. I started with one or two live CDs. But these are not the only
distros to consider. There are one or two major ones (eg, Debian,
Fedora) which are, as far as I know, not available in this form.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 7.04

Likewise. At the moment, Windows is still my primary system, but I'm
trying - not too successfully, so far - to wean myself off it.

and until I sort out something for
playing windows games I have dual boot. Gaming is the only thing I go
into Windows for now, if I had the money I'd get an xbox.

Gaming is of no interest to me, but I understand your problem. For me,
the limiting factors are:
(a) graphics drivers (I need one with software display controls, not
least because the brightness control on my monitor doesn't work, but
can't find one);
(b) Thumbs Plus, for which I can't find an adequate Linux substitute;
and
(c) an Agent Usenet/email history going back to 1998. (I don't
remember why it doesn't go back further...)

I'm also disappointed by the graphics resolutions available to me.
1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz is fine in Windows, but I can't get above 54 Hz in
Linux. 1024 x 768 looks dire on a 19" monitor.

I was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which I found a good DVD
burning prog (in the form of K3B), and already use the excellent
OpenOffice in Windows.

I used Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox for mail and news in Windows
anyway and am using the same programs in Linux so the switch there was
unnoticeable.

Likewise with Firefox. If it wasn't for the history, I'd be content
with Thunderbird.

Your name rings bells in my mind. I've a feeling that our paths have
crossed before... perhaps in the mid-90s on one of Easynet's NGs?

Peter.
