You're right - like the old cars with starting handles. Sometimes
there wasn't enough juice in the battery to turn the engine AND fire
the plugs. One turn of the handle would often get them going, but
keep your thumb out ofthe way! Also good on a cold morning - got the
stiff oil moving first.
And then there were the old motorcycles with separate magnetos and
dynamos. I had one with no battery at all - fired up great on the
magneto and I had the lights wired directly to the dynamo. You just
had to keep the revs up when stationary <g>. Wouldn't get away with
it nowadays.
OP's got a dodgy right arm and can't pull the cord at all. That's why
he's looking for an electric start job. I've just remembered - some
of the B&S engines used to have a pre-wound spring starter. You wound
it up first then it spun the engine at your leisure. Don't know if
that system could be a direct replacement for the recoil starter.
