jill asked:
<How many have you spoken to in the past 5 years?>
none,
If I had a problem with my horses condition or performance, I would
consult a vet., not someone whose sole purpose is to flog me their
products ;-)
How many vets will be up to date with the feeds being produced these days
without reference?
They will know what their blood results give them, they know what they want
to achieve, and then the good ones will phone the nutritionists to discuss
with them what is available to achieve that. Some will have enough
experience to know which feed manufacturers they like best. In some
locations there will be a business relationship [more commonly associated
with pet feeds -- Hills for instance] .
If you have never spoken to nutritionists you will not know what they will
say and what their qualifiications are.
<Go and phone them>
No Jill, I specifically said I doubted the feed was anything but
unbalanced - but as the base product ie alfalfa is so utterley unbalanced
for feeding to horses it would be (hypothetically) interesting to know how
they balance it.
You said
"I would be interested to know how the producers of Alfa based
products address the calcium/phosphorus imbalance for starters"
I said - "phone them"
You are prepared to cast aspersions on their professionalism -- remember I
said the nutritionists not the secretaries - yet you are not prepared to
talk to them -- you know better than them?
<I am as great a sceptic as you but I have spoken to a lot of feed
manufacturers now and you "can" tell which ones are talking tosh and which
aren't>
I can appreciate that - you are an experienced horse/animal person. I am
not against alfa based feeds, just the fact that they should not be hailed
as the new 'wonder feed'.
Who has said they are?
But in this country with plenty of hay but not a lot of reliable quality and
certainly none of the variation made or testing that is done in the North
American territories the variety of chaffs using controlled and measured
quality grass, straws and lucernes are becoming increasingly invaluable to
providing decent quality fodder for equines and other herbivores.
