Thoroughly agree. This is why my two oldies
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/alonella55) Marrick and Tsar are
registered with the donkey breed society.
When the time came to passport 50 horses at a working yard only the
Donkey breed society ofered anything remotely cost effective. With the
result that his passport now says Marrick(horse).
Unfortunately, when you have a horse that needs to be registered with a
particular breed society you just have to take whatever they charge.
Luckily it was only 17 pounds for Magic as he's a pure bred welsh cob.

I havent done the Welsh ones yet. I'm dreading to think what they'll charge,
especially as the non member rates are sooo much higher than the member
rates (at at the price of their membership we are very much non members!)
I've started doing some of ours throught the New Forest society for the
unknown breeding ones, which I can do as a member and are very reasonably
priced, but even they charge £50 for a replacement!! (For a £15
passport...go figure!)
When ours go out on loan now it's with big caveats that if the passport is
lost, the loaner foots the cost of replacement.
It's cost a small fortune to get them all sorted in the first place!!
