Suddenly, without warning, Alison Blake-Reed exclaimed (29-Sep-05 12:42 PM):

And if you have any sort of hip trouble, *don't* try this method. Do it sidesaddle way. While sitting upright, swing your right leg over your pommel, then slide down the horse with your back to it. Much much safer, and if you explain the reason why to your instructor, they'll either agree or offer you an even more effective way of doing it.
I was going to suggest dismounting that way, it is very easy and safe, many people use that method, well worth a go

I thought this method was discouraged on the grounds that if the horse throws its head up at the crucial moment (or presumably steps forward) you will go plop off backwards?
As for poor 'footybet' - it could be as well that after the ride your legs are so jelly-like they can't hold you when you do dismount? I rememeber that when I was first learning my legs just sagged as I reached the ground!

Yea, that definitely sounds familiar. I'm a bit past 'first learning' but after some lessons, I'm still not sure if my legs will hold me up when I hit the ground :)
