I've collected the engine from sunny Sussex & had a chance to look closely
at it now & it appears to have been dry stored for nearly a century. A
remarkable find & one that I shall cherish.
You can see some pictures at

It is past an oily rag restoration & this is the first time I've
contemplated restoring an engine of this age & importance (I know of two
others) & feel a little - but not much! - daunted by the responsibility.
There is precious little paint to be seen except on the tank, so I think
I'll have the aluminium base plate vapour blasted & lacquered & all the
ferrous bits dull zinc plated. That will protect & preserve for at least 25
years & is reversible if necessary.
The barrels & heads I'm contemplating treating with Zeebrite, a graphite
compound used for blacking fire grates. I'm not sure about that, so will try
it on a knackered Villiers head first!
The tank will need a careful clean & inspection, but it might be possible to
restore the enamel. Interestingly, the tank is as fitted to an ABC
Scootamotor & my supposition is that if this is an aero engine starter
(thanks Nick!) it would not be expected to be run for long, hence the skimpy
fan. Neither would it need a big tank & this one would be readily to hand at
the ABC factory, holding both oil & petrol.
Unlike the generator version, it has a throttle control & no governor.

J. Kim Siddorn,
