only flash to mean after you, not **** off. Use it with care, for
pedestrians you need to know there is no other hazard. Never do dozy
things like, "I'm flashing because my car is the same colour". (the
idea you might eliminate flashing is a non starter, so just use it
well to speed up understanding of intentions and don't trust others
flashes fully as they may be aggressive twats saying get out of my
way).
Yes, I know what the HC says.

Three car-drivers coming the other way flashed at me (and drivers
following me) last week.

As I rounded the next bend, there was a speed trap dirty tricks van
parked in a layby.

We weren't speeding, but it was still a nice gesture.

You made a lucky assumption. Less lucky for those behind if you had
been leaking fuel and you misunderstood the flash.

I made no assumptions at all, as you would know had you only read what
I wrote.

An *approaching* driver is rather unlikely to be able to spot a fuel
leak from an *oncoming* car, wouldn't you say?

No, I wouldn't.

Here is the rule again ...

110
Flashing headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users
know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey ANY
OTHER MESSAGE or intimidate other road users.

Which bit is beyond your understanding?

It's actually rule 90 that's about Flashing headlights. Have you not read
the HC recently?

I suggest you also read rule 91..

Oh dear - you read an old version of the HC and criticise others :-(

"If another driver flashes you, never assume it is a signal to go. *use
your own judgement* and proceed carefully.

So, we are allowed to decide for ourselves..

That rule is concerned about drivers who use headlamp flashing for the wrong purpose. Rule 110 only gives one reason for headlamp flashing, so you are being advised NOT TO assume the flash was for you, and not to proceed until YOU have made sure it is clear.
