No doubt there'll be the usual bleating from the usual groups.

Cameras are cash collecters
But they only collect cash from people who are breaking the law and
travelling too fast. The margins are generous and, on uk roads,
there is very little advantage to be gained by breaking speed limits
- particularly in urban areas. Cameras have never collected a penny
from me. Ret.
Nor me,but don't you agree that the emphasis should be on prevention?
Taking away warning signs of impending speed cameras seems a bit daft
to me.Better to have flashing speed warning signs and then maybe a
camera. This has been done in our area and the effect at these spots
has seen a dramatic drop in speeding and the consequential drop of
accidents.
But ISTM that the overall aim of speed cameras should be to deter speeding
within speed limit areas - not just at certain spots within speed limit
areas. The only way to do this effectively is to have completely covert
cameras that cannot be easily seen and slowed down for. Initially there
would be a big increase in fines being handed out - but eventually the
message would get across that exceeding the limits beyond the generous
margins permitted will almost certainly result in a fine and points. This
would also remove the oft-repeated complaint about cameras that drivers are
spending more time looking out for them than concentrating on the road. Not
much point in looking out for them if they are hidden and disguised. Then,
the only way to avoid a fine and points is to keep your speed below the
permitted margins - and hence the stated aim of the cameras has been
achieved.

The generous margins differ from area to are, so there actually needs
to be cosensus on what these are or shpuld be and national
implementation, if you are going to get away with 5%+2 then it should
be the same country wide, if the re is to be zero tolerance then it
needs to be country wide. But I agree with NG about flasing speed
signs, they work more than a camera, most people just need a gentle
reminder from time to time to be careful.
