I don't ever use them because:
1. I might want something inside (rare though).

Fair enough, if you do.

2. I don't know if it will give me a VAT receipt.

All the ones I've seen (Morrisons and Tesco) do. Why not try with a
small amount of fuel and see?

3. I don't know if it will put points on my card.

They will. They also state this explicitly on the instructions
(Morrisons takes their Miles card and Tesco takes the Clubcard).
Tesco's machines have as the first instruction "Insert Clubcard first".

4. I'm scared it will go wrong (try using Tescos new DIY checkouts. I've
used them 3 times. Twice I have stolen - without meaning to. All 3 times
I've felt humiliated & embarrassed. The last time, the assistant had to
come over 8 times. I had 6 items. I still can't believe I tried to scan
my card on the barcode scanner! I was just that flustered - maybe
technology isn't for me. Give me a real human being any day).

Uhm. OK. Perhaps technology isn't for you indeed.

Whilst I may seem stupid. Consider this: I could have been done for
shoplifting. If the card doesn't work in the pump will I get tugged for
driving off without paying? Don't want to take the risk.

No. It will tell you "Sale Completed" (and give you a receipt if you
ask for it), otherwise you haven't paid. There is no risk.

I suspect a lot more people would use them if there was an incentive
such as:
- 1p off a litre.
- double loyalty points.

There's plenty incentive. You don't have to queue in the shop.
