Exactly. They were stopping the motorists who were speeding in
the safest place. Which should not be the priority.

The person concerned was, however, breaking the law and in the
eyes of some that is the ultimate sin.

And also, in the eyes of many, is not.

The eyes of the many to which you refer are irrelevant. Unless
they're prepared to do something about besides get caught breaking
the law and whinging about it.

What can be done about it? I've complained to the council about some
aspects of road design and speed limits, bugger all happens of
course. So, to protest by ignoring speed limits which are unreasonable
and
avoiding detection, and a good deal of whinging, is about all that
most people can do.

As with so many, you only think about what you can achieve as an
individual to which the obvious answer is "Not a great deal"
although a few letters to the Secretary of State, with copies to
your MP, would be a good start.

This is where pressure groups, trade unions, trade associations etc
etc score. Take a leaf out of their book and a form such a group but
don't make a case based on the usual "hard done by motorist" theme.
Try making a case that serves the opposition's case (i.e. the
governments) by showing them how a better result can be achieved by
alternative means.

Yeah, suppose I could, but I don't have enough surplus time / energy
for all that,

If you're not prepared to make some personal changes to help bring about a
significant change in national life, stop whinging.

and I don't think it should be necessary to correct
what obviously needs to be corrected.

Huh?
