Speeding in the States

Just got back from a 3 week driving tour of California, taking in parts of
Nevada and Oregon. As ever, I was impressed with the high rate of speed
limit compliance over there. apart from in and around the major cities,
speed limit compliance (within 5 mph of the posted limit) is almost total.
Americans seem quite happy to cruise along their Interstates at around 68
mph, and even the bikers over there (and I saw many more than you see on the
roads over here) seem content to cruise along on their Harleys at close to
the posted limits. Just what is it with Brits and their 'need for speed' ?
Bearing in mind the tiny size of the UK compared to the States, the heavily
congested roads over here, the much smaller size of the average car and
engine over here, it's perplexing that Americans are content to cruise
whereas Brits are determined to race.
