I've recently noticed (although they've probably been there for ages)
pairs of rectangular lines like vehicle sensors in the road, often
with grey boxes at the side of the road. There seems to be loads of
them (all roads, every few miles) around here, like traffic light
sensors but nowhere near traffic lights, etc.
What do these do? Are they some kind of traffic / speed survey device?
Speed monitoring.
Deciding if there is a need for a camera there

they are every 200-300 yards, I can't believe they would go to this extent
just to decide where to put speed cameras - is it more direct than this, to
alert the police instantaneously to anyone driving a large amount over the
limit?
