Re: speed limiter...

That's no good, I want to approach a limit sign and punch the right
button. Not start fiddling about trying to set it to 29mph... then
49mph... then 29mph... you get the picture.

Every cruise control I've ever met works in basically the same way
with the same functions:

o Set - activates cruise at current speed
o Cancel - deactivates cruise, as does touching the brakes
o Resume - return to last speed Set
o [In,De]crease - like it says...

Usually a tap on the [In,De]crease will change the speed by a small
fixed amount while holding it opens or closes the throttle, the Set
speed is cleared when you come to a halt or slow below some threshold
and if you accelerate above the Set speed briefly and/or by a small
amount the system will Resume when you release the throttle.

I've heard of aftermarket systems with pre-sets but never seen one.

Same here, that's why I want one that does what *I* want it to.

I have come across one cruise control that didn't work as you described.

On my Carlton GSi it had a very crude motor-on-the-throttle-cable cruise
which literally just wound up the cable as needed until you reached the set
speed, then let go and started winding up again. I'm certain there was
something wrong with it!

I have been told that the carlton cruise was a bit rough, but this was
ridiculous. even in 5th, it had a fair bit of torque so when it started
winding it on quickly you knew about it.

On-Off-On-Off was unuseable. And in third it was positively dangerous...
entertaining, but dangerous. Whiplash city.
