Is there a law on the number of people allowed in a car. I have
a five door escort and was wondering if I could get away with 3
adults and 3 small children but cannot find any information
about any passenger limits.

The law requires that each person has their own seat and that
each person wears a seatbelt.

It doesn't.

So are you saying that it's perfectly legal to travel in a car
whilst not wearing a seat belt?

If the car's old enough, of course it is.

It applies to my 1986 Ford Capri so it sure as hell applies to the
OPs Escort. In fact, the only vehicle I personally know of it not
applying to is my old mans 1969 Morris Minor.

IIRC anything post 1973 when the fitting of seatbelts became
compulsory.

Fitting of rear seat belts to new cars became compulsory in 1987.
Retro-fitting of rear seat belts has never been compulsory.
(Retro-fitting of front seat belts became compulsory in 1968 - what is
it you feel happened in 1973?)

The compulsory fitting of front seat belts. I'm not sure you're right about
retro fitting of front seat belts, are you thinking that it became
compulsory to fit seat belts in those vehicles in which mountings had been
made compulsory?

Copied it from the RoSPA site which just says "newer cars". You're
right, though - cars old enough not to have mountings still don't have
to have belts.

The same site says compulsory fitting of front belts to new cars was
in 1965, which agrees with what I remember - it was just before I
started driving.
