Drive as if every road has an imaginary line down it. The line being
your planned route along that road. A line which is the safest way
along the stretch of road in front of you, but be prepared to quickly
modify the line if conditions should change. Each section of the line
will have a maximum safe speed (with a margin for error). The maximum
speed is not that posted as the roads maximum, but your own limit for
which you do not need to look at the speedo -except perhaps for the
long straight bits. Even the long almost straight bits have line along
them, which is not necessarily straight. It should deviate where there
are side roads, drives and similar to improve your vision and
visibility.
Each section of road, the bit you can see as far as the vanishing
point, has a safe speed which takes account of what might be happening
or hidden beyond that vanishing point.
The above line and safe speed allow for the meeting of other vehicles
coming the opposite way, even supposing they have taken a less than
perfect line themselves. It also allows for the meeting of pedestrians
and similar hazards. Always remember, a small adjustment to your speed
up or down can make a big difference to where you meet another vehicle
coming the other way. Never go blindly into a bend hoping it will be
clear of hazards just because it has always been clear before.
The above cannot take account of all that might happen, but will take
account of all that you can reasonably expect.
Thanks, that's pretty much what I do anyway though. I will be
reviewing my speeds next time I go to work.
