means of transport. The same is true of driving a car, mostly
driving is about getting around rather than a sport.

If people were asked to wear helmets, proper seat belts and fire
retardant clothes when driving to the shops there would be strong
opposition. That is a precise parallel with the opposition there is
to encouraging/forcing people to wear cycle helmets when they ride
to the shops.

Whether wearing helmets is sensible in some/all forms of sporting
cycling is a separate debate.

Cycling is a sport as well as a means of transport. Only about 1% of
road journeys are made by bike, but cyclists make up 9% of the UK KSI
statistics. I would call that at least moderately dangerous!

The motor racing spec helmets, full harnesses and fire resistant suits
worn by racing drivers cost in total many hundreds of pounds, as
compared with cycle helmets that cost from $9.99 upwards, so there is
a bit of a difference. They are not compulsory for slower forms of
motor sport.
