solar no less!. Give it another 20 years or so and we might possibly

Carfree Cities proposes a delightful solution
to the vexing problem of urban automobiles.
Two years ago I was amazed by the number of bikes on the streets in Japan. Near the river in Tokyo I came across an underground bike park with a stairway leading out which had a wheel slot next to the stairs in which was running a form of conveyor belt - you simply pushed your wheels into the slot at the bottom and the conveyor did the work of getting you bike to the top. Elsewhere there was a multistory car park; except it wasn't a car park it was a bike park. In Kyoto the local authority (it didn't look like the police) arrived at the station with a flat bed truck and hoovered up all the bikes hanging off railings etc - they filled that flat bed.
