You mentioned helmets twice:-)

If I was a guest I would not welcome being offered a mountain bike,
though others would. Slime is good, as are mudguards (do they work
on a mountain bike?) and a lock. Lights might be useful, if I was
intending to be out after dark, otherwise they are an extra weight
to transport around for no good reason. If I was offered a helmet I
would say, no thank you, if you insisted on me wearing a helmet I
would insist on staying somewhere else.
