I have a Shimano M900 XTR rear derailleur on my old 8-speed mountain bike.
Its old and totally worn-out (and obsolete to boot). Anyone have any
thoughts if I can use an M960 as a straight swap?

Should be fine - Shimano mechs are generally compatible. Note it springs the
other way though, so you'll have to get used to your shifter being marked
wrong.
Personally I'd get something like the M771 XT one.
