I actually *always* start off quite polite. I would have said something like
"s'cuse me mate, do you realise one of your tail lights are out?". Fact is,
when you raise anything with car drivers, be it about the state their car is
in or their piss poor parking or driving habits, the majority will become
defensive and possibly aggressive
If the majority become aggressive with you, maybe you should look at
the manner in which you are dealing with them. I've never, ever had
anyone not thank me for telling them they have lights out, or wheel
trims that look like they are going to fall off. Personally, I'd much
rather be told that my car has a fault I am not aware of.
