Buying on line seems to be the most cost effective
way to go as the majority of shops here (Medway)
apart from Halfords are small with a very limited choice.
I'm up on frame sizes etc and perfectly capable of carrying
out all adjustments, servicing etc.

Provided you're moderately mechanically ept, this will be fine - but you'll
lose out on the chance to try out before you buy.

Top of the list are his 'n hers Claud Butler Odysseys...
just over budget but good specs it appears.

Suspension forks - I wouldn't. Thought the fact it comes with rack and
mudguards is a definite plus.

If you get a bike with 24 or 27 speeds, that means it will have a modern
freehub rather than a freewheel, which IMO are rather better. Wider range,
stronger.

Maybe the quick-release hubs would mean I can get them
inside my Impreza 5 door? Is this practical?

Dunno how much space one of them has, but it ought to be possible. I used to
get one bike in a mini metro without much hassle, and your car has to be
bigger than that.

OTOH carrying externally does mean less chance of nasty dirt on your clean
car :-) (I never worried about that sort if thing)
