I am a Yank and want to take a cycling holiday in the Bath area. I am
also retired Marine Colonel so I would also be interested in military
lodging facilities in the area. I am just beginning to plan so bear
with me if I ask inane questions. any tips would be
appreciated--should I rent a car at the airport and drive to the Bath
area and then rent a bicycle or what?

if your not planning on using a car once around bath, then it seems a
lot of hassel when heathrow (i assume thats where you'll land?) is well
connected by train and to bath/bristol.

some lovely biking in the area such as chedder gorge, get a osmap or two
and browse would be my thing.

Many thanks.

For the benefit of the "yank" "OS Maps" = Ordnance Survey maps. They do various scales but the most common are 1:25000 and 1:50000. They cover the whole country and if you go here http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/ and enter the post code BA1 1AA you'll see a small sample. For cycling the best compromise between how many you need and their usability is probably 1:50000.

Might also be worth looking at http://www.sustrans.org.uk/. I don't always agree with everything they say but they are slowly building a network of cycle friendly routes around the country. It's a mixture of low volume roads, shared (with pedestrians) paths and new construction.

http://www.ctc.org.uk/ is another resource that might be of use. http://www.twotunnels.org.uk/ is a Sustrans supported project (but nowhere near usable yet). This has already been mentioned http://www.bristolbathrailwaypath.org.uk/home.shtml
