The reasonably

carraigeway, he'd f be forgiven for thinking "I've got right of way,
it'll be fine".

That assumes that giving way more often makes up for all the other
dangers - which I don't think is true.

Well not all, obviously. But the more dangerous ones, yes. Chance of
hitting ped when on 'road' based path - 10%. Chance of hitting ped
when on seperate path - 20%. Chance of being seriously injured in
that collision - 5%. Chance of being hit by car on road based path -
10%. Chance of being hit by car on seperate path - 1%. Chance of
being seriously injured in that collision - 50%.
Now they're obviously just random numbers, but the point stands. The
overall risk to cyclists, using a ratio of, say, 20 minor incidents
equals 1 major one, cannot fail to be significantly lower when on a
separate path.

"Separate" paths intersect with roads, and that's where the major danger is.
If these junctions are that much worse than normal ones, it can be worse
than riding on the road normally all the time.
