AFAIK legally we could push through the traffic
lanes along the white line to get to the front and its ASL, but car
drivers REALLY hate that.
Not really had a problem with that approach. I'd expect less grief filtering through the traffic along the road than hopping on the pavement, and often it's best to overtake it to do this. May require planning upon approach to avoid being forced to the left, but that's not too hard.
