I'll soon take delivery of a new bike (*). Currently I have mountain
bike style shoes and pedals --- cleat recessed, stud-like soles. I can
walk in them. The pedals are handy enough in that they have a flat
side --- such that one can easily ride the bike wearing street shoes,
for example, for a short distance when testing something.
Should I go for SPD (?) pedals and buy new shoes? I mean shoes with
what seem like flat soles. Any real advantage over what I have? I
suppose I can get around the non-walking bit.
I'm unlikely to cycle more than 60 miles at a stretch; no racing; TT
highly unlikely; absolute max. 200 miles in a (very good) week.
(*) Giant SCR C3. I know I have no need for it, but I had excess money
in a bank-account and finding a very good LBS tipped me over.
I've become a fan of Shimano PD – A520 pedals; these are the single-sided SPD ones with a light but quite wide frame to provide a platform. I find them much better on longer distances than "normal" SPDs which used to cause me discomfort because of the small contact point. I can use them with either MTB-type shoes as you describe or with road-type shoes. Some people have said they are awkward to clip into, being single-sided, but I've never had a problem with them.
