New shoes

I've been using SPDs for a few years now with those most-common
Shimano trainer style shoes and recently decided to buy something more
lightweight. Partly because they are capable of absorbing a vast
amount of water and take days to dry out.

Now I have my new shoes (Spesh Sport Road which are drilled for just
about any system) I find it much much more difficult to clip
in. Obviously the tread surrounding the cleats on the trainer shoe
helps a lot with location. Is this problem to be expected and why
Looks are favoured for road ?
