My car (like most I guess these days) displays the ambient
temperature and when it's below 5 degrees, a little 'snow flake'
symbol is also shown so I know when to crawl along at 5mph.

Mine has one of these too, and generally I take it to mean I
shouldn't exceed 119mph, as that's the max speed rating for the
winter tyres.

heh. The Jeep has a digital external temp. display - if it's lower
than 2C I just stick it into permanent 4x4 and drive as per any other
day.

So, you are approaching a bend at 50 mph. The bend has ice over all of
the road. All 4 wheels are on ice. How does your precious 4wd help
then?

It increases maximum cornering speed by approximately 7%, IIRC. Can't be
bothered to find a cite, though.

Not very much, certainly. And maximum cornering speed decreases with the
second power of the weight of the vehicle.

You've lost me there, I'm afraid. I can't imagine the assumptions
under which that would be true, and can imagine lots of assumptions
under which weight of vehicle is irrelevant with respect to cornering
speed.
