I'm somewhat surprised at the amount of COBOL talent there must be in this newsgroup

Every time I have to do some (for a system we bought in about 2001), my wife makes comments about wooly mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and cave paintings.

When I was a student /mumble/ years ago we were told during the programming lectures that COBOL was dead and had been dead for 20 years. People are still saying it is dead, yet the system my team maintain is all batch JCL, DB2 & COBOL with a few utilities thrown in like BMC & Icetool. In fact it would be fair to say that the language of choice at my employer is COBOL for mainframe work. So much so that there is an active drive to convert code from another language that we no longer want to support. I had a call from an agency a couple of weeks ago desperate for COBOL developers who thought that they were a rarity and only available as old duffers. In my team we have taken on apprentices for the last couple of years.
