Veloce rear hub

Tried to disassemble Veloce rear hub today, and found sealed bearings. So
there's just a nut and a spacer at each end of the axle, and one nut came
loose, but the freehub end one wouldn't. Holding the hollow axle end in a
vice looks like a recipe for disaster - so how do I free the other nut to
get the freehub off? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Problem solved, was Stripped axle nut, Shimano 8 speed hub gear
... Nut threads strip more readily on an axle with flats than on an axle ... item, which I assume the one from my LBS to be, is shorter still. ...
