Question 2.2

A short description of the proposed event or project - up to 300 words

==========

1. Life skill cycle training for all Year 2 pupils to
National standards

Good.

Level 1.

2. On-road cycle training option for Year 4 pupils and parents to
National standards
Level 2.

3. Advanced cycle training option for Year 6 pupils and parents to
National standards
Level 3.

1. All Year 2 pupils who cannot yet ride a bike, about 20, will be
given instruction to ride for at least one minute without stopping.
The school's two Year 2 classes, 60 children, will be split into
groups of 12 children and given three Level 1 lessons as part of the
PE curriculum. This will give learning to cycle confidently an equal
status to learning to swim confidently, as a life skill. This
training will take place within the school day during the Autumn Term
2006 and Spring Term 2007.

2. Eleven complete novice Year 4 pupils have been given initial cycle
training with funding from last year's project. A further 31 Year 4
children have requested Level 1B/2 training, bringing the total to 42
children (70% of the cohort). Three adults have also requested Level
1B/2 training. The 45 trainees have been split into four groups and
will be given a six lesson training course during the Summer Term
2006, within and outside the school day, starting on 19th April 2006.

3. Year 6 pupils will be offered Level 3 training, outside the school
day, during the Autumn Term 2006 and Spring Term 2007. Following the
pilot Level 3 training course, funded by last year's project, the
course is to be extended from four to six weeks. The training will
include a cycle ride requiring the use of lights,

I'd lose this bit, to save words:
part of which will be in an area without street lighting, so good
quality bicycle lights are essential.
It belongs in info to parents.

I agree that it's not part of a 'short description', it's a reason for
wanting good lights. I'll put it somewhere else in the application.

Up to 32 children and adults can participate in the
training in four groups of no more than eight trainees.

I think you need to say a bit more about instructor/trainee ratios. In
particular, L3 training is generally done with one trainee per
instructor. You could check what the National Standard says.

From Child Cyclist Training - National Standard Guidelines (DoT)
Section 6.3
Advanced training will have pupil instructor ratios no greater than 2
to 1. Providers should also conside the child protection issues of
1:1 training. The course structure and organisation will be roughly
the same as an adult training session.

I work with the ratio 3:8. At some drills, one instructor sets the
trainees off, another instructor on the junction, and a third
receiving. At other drills, such as dual carriageways and filtering,
the site selected allows for a 'circular' trip, and the trainees set
off in pairs followed by an instructor.

Section 4c.2
Where advanced training is offered in schools, it need not be the aim
to deliver the whole of the Level 3 standard. [...] An example is
where the principal aim is to plan and ride safest route to and from
school in order to increase the number of children cycling to school.

Is this an application for a 'London Cycle Community Grant'?

Yes. Thanks for your input.
