Cheaper to buy/install perhaps, but environmentally speaking, are photovoltaics not said to require much more energy to manufacture than they could ever produce and you're therefore better off tapping into any existing power supply? Or is this just a myth?
That is /said/ about pretty much every form of energy generation except coal fired power stations. It's certainly /said/ about wind farms, nuclear power stations, etc. It's a convenient way of knocking an energy technology you don't like.
It is, isn't it. I ought to get the figures.
Energy payback for wind and nuclear are more or less the same as for coal, taking less than 6 months of generation to offset the production. (on roughly remembered figures, wind takes 3 months to offset energy used, and another 3 months to offset the carbon dioxide produced making concrete, assuming it's replacing coal, but ICBW.)
For solar, it is in the region of 1-2 years of use.
Anyway, that claim is utter bollocks.
