For next term I'm setting up a 22 hour cycle training course, over ten weeks, for year 6 pupils (ages 10/11).
Week 1: Bike control (2 hrs playground based) Week 2: Looking and signalling (2 hrs non road based) Week 3: On-road journeys (2 hrs) Week 4: Cycle maintenance (2 hrs playground based) Week 5: Junctions (2 hrs) Week 6: Using cycle paths (3 hrs) Week 7: Traffic light junctions (2 hrs) Week 8: Night time cycling (2 hrs) Week 9: Roundabouts (2 hrs) Week 10: Assessment ride (3 hrs mostly having fun!)
Have I forgotten anything? I'll expand further on each of the lessons if required. e.g cycle maintenance will cover putting a chain back on, fixing punctures and minor adjustments.
How many trainees? How many instructors?
Unless they are completely without road sense, or can barely ride a bike at all, this schedule sounds very relaxed. You risk boring your trainees.
We cover everything above except maintenance and night cycling in 3 x 2-hr sessions plus 1 x 1.5hr. Sometimes another couple of hours would be needed to complete everything.
The 1.5hr session is 2 trainees with one instructor. They learn really fast when they're in this small group, and to some extent they can choose what they want to do. So I'd do your 'assessment ride' as 1.5 hour rides with half the trainees at a time.
You need to do bike checks at the start unless you're using the bikes you've bought.
Using Cycle paths should include on-road facilities, with particular reference to when not to use them.
Keep the maintenance session for a rainy day rather than scheduling it a particular week.
