Read the article below and answer the questions at the end of the text.
Clues to the answers can be found within the story
Tradition has it that there is a little aureate treasure to be found in the
town to which I am heading. I am travelling by rail – principally because
the journey will take me across an impressive piece of railway
infrastructure. Accordingly, seven miles to the southwest of the town
centre, the line passes through a village by means of a dramatic viaduct.
Almost half a mile long and built in 1852, its 43 arches bound at a height
of 65ft across the river. “Top notch,” I exclaim as we trundle across,
although I wonder whether I might better have appreciated the architecture
had I viewed it from below.
The 80-mile river, meanwhile, is very much the focus of today’s journey.
Indeed, five miles beyond the viaduct, we meet again as the line crosses it
on its final approach to the town. A tad beyond, we pause briefly at a
station, before once more setting off with a rumble.
Through there lies something that limits the river’s tidal reach – a
structure sitting upon some 580,000 cubic feet of concrete, completed in
1995. Alighting at the next station, I check my bearings. Hmm: the football
stadium is just a short walk away. Founded in 1876 by a cricket club, the
football club was, in 1905, the first to pay a £1,000 transfer fee for a
player – born, in 1880, not too far from here. Noted managers include one
who, as a player for another team, became, in 1937, the youngest captain to
skipper an FA Cup-winning side. And, for good measure, a second player and
manager (though not of this team), 1955 footballer of the year, was born in
the town.
Meanwhile, the object of my desire lies half a mile north-northeast; it
does not take long to find it. So it’s true: it’s not in Arizona. A listed
structure, 851ft long, it was opened in 1911. You need a head for heights,
that’s for sure. And is this really where gold might be found? It’s a
riveting prospect, and the odds must be thousands to one.
I join the queue. There may be a short wait, but I am quite prepared to
hang around.
The competition questions (with suggested answers):
1 What is the name of the viaduct? <- Yarm Viaduct [1]
2 Which listed structure was opened in 1911? <- Middlesborough Transporter
