Sounds a lot like an over-heating problem. Could be several things.
Your cpu fan could have died, graphics card fan could have died,
heat-sink on your cpu could have become clogged with dust (actually
quite a few things could be clogged with dust that could cause
over-heating), and the power supply could be on its way out.
You haven't moved your PC recently have you ? As another possibility
is that your heat-sink/fan assembly on your cpu could have worked loose,
again causing over-heating. If your system over heats, then it will
shut down but be able to restart a few seconds or minutes later and
run for a while before dying again.
It does not sound much like a virus to me. No harm in running some
anti-virus software to see if that helps but I wouldn't hold out a
great deal of hope. Unfortunately, this sort of lockup can cause
other problems such as damage to your hard drive, which would explain
your disappearing data.
